The John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct project is one of the largest healthcare infrastructure projects currently underway in New South Wales, to enhance healthcare services across the Hunter, New England and northern NSW regions.

The John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct project will transform healthcare services for Newcastle, the greater Hunter region and northern NSW communities.

John Hunter is one of the most utilised healthcare campuses in NSW and has one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the state. The redevelopment of the John Hunter and John Hunter Children’s Hospitals will deliver a significant expansion providing additional capacity and purpose-built infrastructure, to enable the implementation of contemporary models of care.

The project includes a new Acute Services Building comprising four levels of car parking and seven levels dedicated to patient care and clinical services.

Fredon was engaged under an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) model, providing valuable input during the design phase to identify value engineering opportunities and ensure the operational and clinical requirements of the facility were fully integrated into the project scope.

The HVAC scope incorporated complex healthcare engineering solutions designed to support critical clinical operations. Key systems included dedicated operating theatre air handling units with HEPA filtration, active humidity control and pressure-controlled environments, a series-counterflow central chilled water plant arrangement, smoke management and stair pressurisation systems compliant with NCC and AS1668.
