The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is a landmark NSW Government investment delivering a major expansion of paediatric healthcare services in Western Sydney. Located within the Westmead Hospital precinct, the new Paediatric Services Building connects with the Emergency Department, medical imaging, and short-stay facilities, providing state-of-the-art healthcare environments for some of the region’s most critical services.

The facility includes expanded and new clinical areas such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), cancer services, operating theatres, cardiac catheterisation and interventional laboratories, pharmacy services, oncology ambulatory care, dedicated burns and plastics inpatient units, and additional inpatient accommodation.

Fredon was engaged to deliver the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of both the electrical and mechanical services throughout the development.

The electrical scope included high and low voltage infrastructure, transformers, switchboards, standby generators, UPS systems, power and lighting installations, structured cabling, emergency lighting, energy management systems, security and access control systems, CCTV and duress systems, nurse call systems, audio visual services, communications infrastructure, and comprehensive building monitoring systems.

The mechanical services included the installation of a high-performance series counter-flow chilled water plant, comfort and critical air conditioning systems serving operating theatres, pharmacy and patient care areas, specialist ventilation systems, isolation room exhaust systems, NCC-compliant smoke exhaust and zone pressurisation systems, dedicated cooling systems for electrical and lift motor rooms, and pandemic ward exhaust systems.

Throughout the project, Fredon maintained the highest standards of safety, quality and environmental management, implementing project-specific HSEQ plans and Safe Work Method Statements.

The successful delivery of this project demonstrates Fredon’s capability to provide fully integrated building services solutions for complex healthcare environments, supporting the delivery of world-class medical facilities for the people of Western Sydney.
